Corby

This summer no beach or relaxing….Carpintero Naval Patrick Klee has a new project: A total refit of the Corby 26, named “Samurai”. Samurai is famous of winning many regattas all around the world but was left in the harbour of Denia without any good maintenance because the owner has health problems and could not take care of it any more.

The owner built the boat with the architect of Corby himself. He would love to sail once more on the Samurai…..We could not refuse his wish. We bought the boat and are now working on it to make his wish come true. Ones more we will sail out and challenge a regatta with the Samurai and Gerard Fitzpatrick!

Some detailed information about the Samurai: The Yacht Samurai is 7.9 meters. No. Irl 2026 47/7. Model Corby 26. weight 2 tons. Built in Dublin 2000 by Gerard Fitzpatrick with the designer and architect John Corby Cowes i.o.w. Samurai has an engine. Yanmar 10HP no. 0113.

June 2016: Status quo of the Samurai?

  • Engine turns but doesn’t start, probable the valves are not closing.
  • Engine supports are rotten.
  • Looks like all the riggings needs to be replaced.
  • Around the mast we need to do wood replacements and in the cockpit as well.
  • The floor of the cockpit is very instable
  • 2 places on the hull need fibreglass work
  • Cockpit is full of black mold
  • Inside the cockpit the banks need to be replaced

July 2016: Work done!?

  • Cockpit has been cleaned no mold anymore
  • Cockpit has been sanded
  • We took all the (most Harkan) hardware off the boat to clean, repair and oil it.
  • We’ve cleaned the gill of the boat totally
  • Orderded new Harkan maintenance material, orderded Epifanes, Orderded Bostik and FEQ Teak, waiting for delivery!

August/September 2016: What more to do?

  • Repair the engine and make new engine supports
  • Replace riggings when the mast will be down
  • Wood replacement where necessary on the boat
  • Replace the cockpit floor
  • Fixe two places on the hull with fibreglass and paint the hull
  • Refit interior
  • New teak deck
  • New small windows for light in the cockpit

The end of October 2016: With the wind still warm here in Spain we hope to let the Samurai back in to the waters of Spain and go for a first adventure!

For now….we stop informing. Work to be done! Loads and loads of work!

The World’s largest catamaran event. Approximately 500 catamarans, including the world’s best yachtsmen, attempt to sail around the island as fast as they can. The start, at “Paal 17”, is spectacular.

The Ronde om Texel (Round Texel) is a regatta for catamarans around the island of Texel in The Netherlands. Round Texel was first organized in 1978. In that year Sigi Lach (from Germany) won in a Hobie 14 in a field of 84 participants. Since then the race grown into the biggest catamaran race in the world with an annual average of 600 cats participating. The race has its start and finish near Paal 17 on the North Sea and is approximately 100 kilometers long. It is organized once a year on a Saturday in June. The race starts an hour before high tide to ensure that there is enough water to pass the high mud flats northeast of the island. This tidal prerequisite determines the date that is chosen each year for the event.

Strong tidal currents and variable winds around the island make Round Texel a highly tactical race that has been won alternately by professional sportsmen and skilled outsiders. Notable winners have been Reginald White, the first multihull Olympic champion, who won Round Texel in 1994 at the age of 59. In 2003 the trophy went to Darren Bundock, world champion in several multihull classes in 2003, 2004 and 2005. The 30th anniversary race on June 23, 2007 was won by Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby from Australia in a F18 Hobie Tiger. Line honours were won in 2007 and 2008 by Xander Pols and Tjiddo Veenstra. In 2009 they took a second place in the line honours ranking.

The female helm Carolijn Brouwer and her crew Wouter Samama made history after finishing on the 10th of June 2012 in 3hours, 10 mins and 35 seconds placing first overall and becoming the first female helmsman to win. Brouwer: ‘We were already gone at the starting gun. Wouter checked the line well and said I just had to go. He told me not to look over the shoulders, but I did it secretly. That was an enjoyment.”‘In the gusts we got some height in order to stay out of the surf. Only after fifteen minutes, Xander Pols past us. We really haven’t seen any other F18’s around us. It was quite exciting at the VC-buoy, because we were double trapezing and sometimes you hit the ground there, so we put on the brakes a bit. However, later on at Oudeschild we really got stuck.” When asked how this success feels, Brouwer says: ‘This is amazing. We went for it, but this is better than expected. Finally a normal Round Texel Race, because last year we were already hit and broken before the start.’

With proud we sponsor a young sailor Jacobo Miguel who has lost his hearth to sailing his catamaran everywhere in the world. For a young sailor in the toughest regatta of the world he can be proud that he could participate with this regatta!

Lets sail to the next regatta!

We as sponsor “Carpintero Naval Patrick Klee” will be there again to support you!
